Use These Four Tips To Keep Your Commercial Ice Machine In Good Condition

Whether you have a restaurant or are running a hotel, a commercial ice machine is a necessary appliance, particularly during the summer months. It is important to keep them working well so that you can reduce the chances that you'll need to repair or replace the machine when you need it most. Here are some things you can do to make sure your ice machine stays in good shape.

Protect the Machine from Mold

Mildew and mold can grow in a variety of places, and an ice machine can be a breeding ground for both if you are not careful. To avoid the growth of fungus and mildew, make sure the ice machine is cleaned regularly.

Make sure that you use a diluted vinegar solution to wipe down the exterior surface, as vinegar is non-toxic and can kill about 82% of different mold species. Avoid using bleach, as it is not that effective. You might even consider having a cleaning sheet so that someone can check off that they've cleaned the machine. That way, you'll know that it is being done.

Keep the Surface Clear

In a busy restaurant or hotel, the ice machine might start to become yet another surface for equipment or large boxes. However, your ice machine is not intended to handle that much weight on a constant basis, and the pressure may interfere with operation. Therefore, be sure to keep the surface of the machine clear and remind your employees to do the same.

Clean the Air Filter Frequently

You may not even realize that your ice machine has an air filter that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Cleaning this filter allows clean air to circulate much more easily, and a clogged filter can cause the entire machine to have to work harder; that can lead to premature failure.

Consult the manual for your ice machine to determine where the filter is located, and make sure that you or your employees remove it frequently and clean it by brushing dust and debris off of it with a pipe cleaner or bristle brush.

If you do not have the manual for your ice machine, check out the manufacturer's site on the internet, which should provide the necessary information.

Ensure Proper Air Flow

Space may be limited, so you may have pushed the ice machine against the wall to make sure that it is out of the way. However, be aware that there are air registers and vents on the back of the appliance for ventilation purposes. The machine should be kept some distance away from walls to ensure adequate air flow. Check with the manufacturer for the exact clearance required for your model.
